Space Jam: A New Legacy

Movie theatres are back! I went into this film with very very very low expectations. It was still super cringey and I think Lebron James should stick to basketball, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I never saw the first Space Jam movie but you don’t really need to have seen it to understand this one. From what I gather it’s basically the exact same film just in 2021 with the technology of today. It’s not really a good movie and the whole thing is like one giant advertisement for Warner Brothers and all of its intellectual property. They go through DC comics, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, etc. Additionally, the audience members for the basketball game are comprised of characters across a variety of Warner Brothers films like Stanley from The Mask and Pennywise from IT. It seemed like a little too much and unnecessary, as it took away from the movie.

I actually really liked the animation and think it was really well done. Throughout the film, there is a combination of different styles of animation. Every different world they go to has a different look and feel to it and I think that was really cool for a movie like this. It’s also really colourful and helps add to the overall mood of the movie.

The story is kind of boring and weird. You already know exactly what’s going to happen from the very beginning. It's predictable, but really the movie is just for fun. The film is not meant to be taken seriously. It’s a very silly movie and I could not take it seriously for even a minute. I love Looney Tunes, I used to watch it almost every morning growing up so to watch them on the big screen is really cool. Casting-wise, I really like how they cast this movie especially the likes of Zendaya voicing Lola and Don Cheadle playing the villain. He was actually amazing in this which is funny since it is such a weird role.

Overall, the movie is not the greatest but it's fun. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. If you just want to go see something at the movies for a few laughs it's a good choice. The only reason I was going to see this movie in the first place was because of Zendaya. I feel like going into this movie you either have to be a fan of Lebron James, the original Space Jam movie or the Looney Tunes characters. If you are unfamiliar with everything in it I feel like it would have been a lot less enjoyable. It’s just a lighthearted and fun movie but I wouldn’t have watched it otherwise. I probably won’t even ever watch it again. I was glad I went and saw it but it's not something you really need to go see on the big screen.
