House of Gucci

   

House of Gucci was a lot better than I thought it would be. I was looking forward to this film for a while and I found the story very compelling. I think this story is cool because it's based on true events I feel like I actually learned something about this company, its origins, and why it's run the way it is now. Honestly, I knew nothing about the Gucci brand and the Gucci family and so this was really cool to not only see how they got started but this rollercoaster of events that occurred to get to where it is today.




This is a really great cast, I love Adam Driver, Al Pacino, and Lady Gaga in this. Adam Driver is one of my favourite actors and this was one of his better roles. The last thing I saw Lady Gaga in was A Star is Born and I didn't really like her in that. She was much better in this film and honestly, I was surprised by how great her performance was. I love this cast, except for Jared Leto. I don’t know what his accent was but his character is so pointless, annoying, and sounds like Luigi from Super Mario Brothers. His character says the most random things that just don't fit with the overall tone of the film and most of his lines are annoying, unnecessary, or confusing. We were laughing at just how stupid his character was in very serious moments of the film. In general, I am just not a fan of him as an actor and his work. I think the cast is really the heart of this film, and Jared Leto takes away from that.




One thing that really stood out for me was the set design, attention to detail, and costumes. It really enhances this film and creates a sense of place. The costumes and settings fit where they are in the world, and when these events took place. The costumes/sets help to tell the story and the style changes at different points in the story to kind of represent the state of the family and where they are.





Overall, I really enjoyed this film. It could have been better but honestly, I am very surprised they were not up for many Oscars. This film wasn’t really anything that special but it was still a very compelling and interesting story with a very talented cast. I do recommend giving it a watch, especially if you are into fashion, but even if you aren’t and know absolutely nothing about Gucci, this is still a really good film to watch. I feel like I learned a lot about the brand and it was a really unique story. However, a show that I found very similar to this was American Crime Story: The Assassination of Giani Versace. They are both about these established luxury fashion brands and actually have very similar stories. They both start with these powerful family empires and let’s just say their stories end in a very similar fashion. So if you liked that I recommend watching House of Gucci and vice versa.
