Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023) - IMDb

Ahhh this movie is so so good! Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is easily the best Marvel movie since Avengers: Endgame. This is what I want to see from Marvel and I like to hope this means they are finally back on track. Everyone thank James Gunn for single-handedly restoring my faith in the MCU. The Guardians of the Galaxy movies have always had a special place in my heart and I think this trilogy is the best trilogy within the MCU. The first Marvel movie I watched and fell in love with was Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 back in 2014 and it's finally come to an end. I couldn’t have been happier and sadder with this ending. Obviously, spoilers are ahead so if you have not seen it go watch it right now!

I like that the story focused on Rocket’s back story. We have only ever had bits and pieces of how he was made to be the way he is, but this was a really interesting take on the character. I think we learn so much about Rocket that it changes your whole perspective on him. I loved little Rocket’s first family pre-guardians days. Lila, Floor, and Teefs made up the cutest little group. Baby Rocket was adorable and I felt so connected to that group so fast. The one thing I didn’t like was that the last way they see him before they died was as Rocket was absolutely unhinged shooting people. This scene absolutely broke my heart and made me feel so sad for baby Rocket. They had me ugly crying my eyes out in the theatre. I don’t think I have cried at a movie like that since I thought Groot was going to die in the first movie.

I liked that they didn’t totally rebuild the Gamora and Star-Lord relationship honestly. I like that they are still close and there is something there definitely, but it shows that she is a different person and not the person he fell in love with in the first two movies. I like that by the end of the film Peter is going on this solo journey to Earth. I think that's kind of the only thing about his character that has yet to be completely explored.

I didn’t love the ending with the Guardians all going their separate ways but I think they did it in a way that is very true to the characters. Nebula finally gets her family, Drax dances, and Groot says more than "I am Groot". I loved loved loved that. I didn’t really understand why Groot said “I love you guys” in the theatre, but in case you missed it too, it means that we the audience are now a part of the Guardians of the Galaxy family and can now understand Groot. Who knew a character saying more than three words would shock me like that.

Another Groot scene I really like was when he had the hidden guns and did the iconic shooting in a circle scene with Rocket on his shoulder like they did in the original film. One of my favourite scenes in the whole film though is Peter dropping the MCU’s first F-bomb when Nebula is trying to get into a car on counter Earth.

Overall, I really loved this movie and I think it helped that I went into it with very low expectations. I was so nervous about this movie because of how disappointing the most recent Marvel movies have been, but I was pleasantly surprised by how great it was. It was an emotional rollercoaster - this movie had me laughing and crying and everything in between. This movie marks a real end of an era for me and I highly recommend giving it a watch.
