Heartstopper

I absolutely love this show, it is the ultimate comfort show. Season 2 has only been out for a month and I have already watched it four times. I recommend this show to absolutely everyone. The series is based on the graphic novel series of the same name and has 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. The show focuses on two teen boys, Nick and Charlie as they navigate identity, love and friendship.

The characters are so loveable and fun. You feel so attached to them, and you can find something to connect to in all of them. My favourite characters are Nick, Charlie, Elle, Darcy, Tori, and of course Nelly (Nick’s dog). I also love Olivia Colman as Nick's mom, she does so much with such a small part. Nick and Charlie are adorable. I love the representation, I love that they can just be a young couple in love and not just focus on the struggles of being gay. The second season definitely explores a lot more serious topics than the first season, like eating disorders and mental health crises. I think this is really great and starts some valuable conversations, but also made me so sad. I just want Charlie Spring to be happy!

Nick’s coming out journey is really interesting and well-written. I love the message that you don’t have to come out to people if you don’t want to. It’s for you, not them. There’s no deadline. It also explores multiple different ways people react to loved ones coming out, not just negative. One of my favourite scenes is when Nick comes out to his mom it's just so wholesome and powerful.

I love the music, it's a lot of indie/pop music that is very fitting with the show’s theming. The show has very strong theming and art design. The acting/ dialogue can be awkward or cringey at times but it makes the show a little cuter. They are teenagers, they're supposed to be awkward. The colour scheme is beautiful. I also love the editing and the odd graphic of leaves and sparks and things like that. I think it really adds to the show and highlights how the characters are feeling. It's also a cute nod to the graphic novels.

I’ve read all the Heartstopper books and they make me so happy. I 100% recommend giving them a read. My sister got me into this show and the books and she has been reading the comics for years online so go snoop around for them online. If you are curious about these books, I’ve made TikTok videos on all of them on my book review TikTok page! (Shameless self-promotion lol)

I also love that the series is created by a young person. Alice Oseman (now 28) is such an amazing writer and it really shows that just because you are young, it doesn’t mean you can’t create great stories. She had a publishing deal at age 17 and I think that's very inspiring. She is so talented and I am a big fan of her work. I’ve recently bought one of her novels “Solitaire” and I am very excited to read it.

Overall, the show is definitely a more teen/tween show but I think everyone can find something to connect to in it. It’s very wholesome and highlights a lot of different issues that teens and especially 2SLGBTQIA+ people can relate to or feel represented in. Its also visually stunning and the theming is unique and fun.
