Mean Girls (2024)

I have been loving the recent resurgence of Mean Girls, a classic and one of my favourite movies of all time. The original film is so iconic and was so influential in popular culture. Its a really interesting over exaggeration of popular people, clicks, and high school "hierarchy" if you will.  It was fun to go back to North Shore High and re-visit that world.

I love this cast. Miss Renee Rapp is amazing. I love her as Regina George. Her voice is so beautiful, her song “World Burn” was my favourite. The plastics is dream casting with Bebe Wood and Avantika Vandanapu as Gretchen and Karen. I knew of Bebe Wood from Love, Victor where she played one of my favourite characters so it was nice to see her in this too. I was pleasantly surprised by AuliÊ»i Cravalho as Janice and Jaquel Spivey as Damian. Those are two of my favourite characters from the original film and they are such an iconic duo that I didn’t know what to expect seeing them portrayed by different actors. But I absolutely loved them, they did an incredible job in the roles and it was also nice to see more diversity in this movie than in the previous film.

Tina Fey Supremacy. I love that some of the teachers came back including Tim Meadows as Principal Duvall, Jon Haam as Coach Carr, and Tina Fey as Ms.Norbury. There were a lot of cameos from TikTok influencers to Megan the Stallion to Lindsay Lohan. I also liked the addition of Jenna Fischer as Cady’s mom because I am a big fan of “The Office”. Personally, nothing really stood out to me about Angourie Rice’s performance as Cady. I don’t think they brought anything new to the role, whereas the other characters feel so fun and different from the original characters.

You really have to love musicals to like this movie. The songs were so long and I didn’t really like most of them. Also, I don’t know who wrote the lyrics to these songs but they are so strange and don’t feel natural at all.  Renee Rapp has the best vocals in the whole cast, and I’ve been listening to “Not My Fault” by Renee Rapp featuring Megan the Stallion for the past week leading up to this movie. This song played in the end credits of the movie and it made me so happy. I enjoyed this movie fine, but I didn’t love the musical part.

I saw this movie in an empty theatre on opening day which was lovely. The original is still the best version, but I didn’t go into this movie expecting it to be better. I did see the musical when it was performed in Toronto and I really have to think about it as a separate entity from the original movie. Overall, if you are a big Mean Girls fan or if you are into musicals then I think you will enjoy this movie. But I like musicals and I still found the musical scenes hard to get through.

Instead of a movie musical reboot, I think I would have liked to see the original cast come back to North Shore High and see where they are now and have a new generation of Plastics. Overall, I liked the movie fine, I think aspects of the movie were fun, and I love this cast, but I feel that it didn’t bring anything new to the story.
