Twisters
I saw the original Twister in my grade 9 Geography class on a box tv (this speaks for itself about the quality of the Ontario High School Curriculum). I didn’t really think much about the film (and what it had to do with Canadian Geography) but when I saw the trailer for Twisters in 2024 I didn't have that much interest in the film. Then there was nothing good in theatres so I went to see it and honestly it really really impressed me.
I loved the characters, these actors are the heart of the film and make it what it is. You have Daisy Edgar Jones, Glen Powell, Kiernan Shipka, Anthony Ramos, and Katy M. O’Brian who I have seen in various other projects. Then you have actors like Brandon Perea and Sasha Lane who bring to life very humorous and fun characters, who I have never seen in anything before. The casting of this film is simply brilliant. I really liked Glen Powell as Tyler, his character had a lot more depth to it than I expected based off of the trailer. I like that he doesn’t play a total jerk for the entirety of the film, his character is just “misunderstood”. Daisy Edgar-Jones is amazing and reminds me of a younger Anne Hathaway in this film and I loved her character. I think she is a very strong lead character.
I think the film's only pitfall is that I wish that the bad guy, Marshall Riggs, was a bit more developed. I think this would have made Javier appear as more of a bad guy with a screwed up moral compass, which would have made for a better redemption arc.She is mad at him and leaves him for just selling data to fund his company essentially to help others in the future. It’s also not that clear to me how this data helps Riggs and what types of data they are giving him. It just doesn't feel justified enough why she is mad at him. Whereas if Riggs was more evil and Javier was working more closely with him, than his return to help the town would have been more impactful.
The movie is filled with laughs and the story was really strong. The opening scene with the tornado and deaths of the characters you are JUST introduced to is insane, and really sucks you into their world. I also loved the closing scene with Tyler and Kate at the airport, which had me dying of laughter and I think it really capped off the movie well. But with that I also liked that the love story wasn’t made to be the whole thing.
Overall I loved this movie and I’m still thinking about it days later. This is not a sequel to the original film, however there are a few nods to the original film from 1996. The film is really well done and it feels like a good quality film. The storms look real and not completely like CGI. I highly recommend this movie, its so underrated right now. If you haven’t seen it then go give it a watch! I think its the best thing I have seen in the theater recently.
