Jane Austen Wrecked my Life
TIFF! I lovedddd this movie. I think it was my favourite of the whole festival. I went into this movie knowing nothing about it. What drew me to the film was its title. I think it is such a great title that does its job at getting you interested in the movie.
Jane Austen Wrecked my Life is a French film following a woman named Agathe who is terrified to leave her comfort zone. She works in a bookstore and lives with her sister and her son following a car accident that killed Agathe's parents. Agathe is a writer, and she is really good at it, but she doesn’t want anyone to read it and never knows how to finish her stories.
When her best friend Felix applies on her behalf for a Jane Austen Writing Residency, she is forced out of the comfort of her home and monotony of her day to day life. She experiences a new lifestyle and meets new people, but struggles to work on her writing. Here she somehow ends up in a weird love triangle between herself, her best friend from home who kissed her before she left, and Oliver, a guy she met at the residency. She becomes the Jane Austen main character that she dreamed of becoming, but is it really what she wants?
I loved this movie. It is weirdly a lot more relatable than I thought it would be. The movie was surprisingly hilarious and the audience loved it. The audience was laughing harder than I heard all festival.
I like that you don’t know which guy she is going to end up with, you truly don’t know which one she is going to pick, or if she will pick neither of them. I like the kind of a will they won't they between her and her friend back home, but of course the enemies to lovers trope is always fun. The movie is very trope heavy, but I still loved that about it.
It was a good surprise gem for me. It made me feel good and I left feeling happy. It's just a really heartwarming film and if you have the chance to watch this film, I’d definitely give it a watch.
