Wicked

 Wicked (2024) - IMDb

I have seen this movie two days in a row. I love this movie with all my heart. The world that they have created is so special and I can not wait for part 2.

The casting is incredible and where this film shines the most. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Ervio are the perfect casting choices for their respective roles. Now that I have seen them, I can’t imagine anyone else in these roles. I’ve seen Ariana Grande act from Nickelodeon to Scream Queens but never in a feature film like this, and she absolutely outdid herself. I had never seen Cynthia Ervio in a leading role before, and was not familiar with her. After seeing her in Wicked though, she is one talented actress.

I’m convinced that there is nothing Michelle Yeoh cannot do. I haven’t seen her play a villain before, she is such a badass in this. As for Jeff Goldblum, this part was the perfect fit for him. Even though I knew he was going to be evil, he plays such a fun villain.

It was fun to see Jonathan Bailey from Bridgerton in this film, and seeing him dance and sing. The choreography, the vocals, the use of setting and props in every musical number is unparalleled. I also loved that they found a way to bring Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel (who portrayed the original Glinda and Elphaba on Broadway). I think they rounded out the cast so well and it was a nice surprise.

I really liked the level of representation in this film, from Nessa in the wheelchair who persistently says she doesn’t need help but is ignored, to the commentary on LGBTQ+ and cultural representation. This movie holds up as a mirror of current society.

This movie was a smart production. From the original Wizard of Oz IP, the book, and the musical, there is a huge fan base for this. Both times I went to see this movie the theatre was packed and everyone clapped at the end. It was such a heartwarming experience to see this movie in theatres. This is the type of movie that reminds you why shared experiences are so lovely at the theatre.

This movie is funny, sweet, and the world that they were able to create blows me away. The set design, costuming, and props really bring the whole film together and transport you to the world of Oz. I feel like I have been waiting for this movie for years and it's finally here. I loved it and I hope that you do too. Part 2 cannot come soon enough, it is currently slotted for next winter!
