A Complete Unknown

So I went into this movie knowing nothing about Bob Dylan, and I think I left this movie knowing about the same about Bob Dylan. To be very upfront, I only went to see this movie because of Timothee Chalamet and to see yet another movie where he plays opposite Elle Fanning.

I have watched every project Timothee Chalamet has ever been in. This one just fell short for me. It was not as good as other biopics that I have watched over the years like Bohemian Rhapsody, Rocketman and Elvis.

I liked that Timothee sang in the film, I always like when actors do the singing themselves and learn the dialect and very specific ways that the artist sings.

I love the aesthetic of the film, the costumes, setting, props, all of it. But there really is not any plot, things just kind of happen. The pacing is slow and I just didn’t feel like I really got to know the characters and what goes on inside Bob’s head.

The audience in the theatre was very mixed, it was young adult girls and then definitely a more senior audience. Reminded me of seeing Elvis with Austin Butler in the lead role.

As someone who did not grow up during the introduction of electronic sounds in music and electric guitars, I really didn’t get the big deal. It didn’t feel like a big plot moment, which made it fall kinda flat. I just didn’t care if he used an acoustic and played folk music vs an electric guitar.

Overall, I just found the movie to be okay. I’m glad I saw it but I just don’t think it was for me. However, I really did love this cast from Elle Fanning and Monica Barbaro to Edward Norton and Dan Fogler. Fantastic casting, definitely the shining stars of the movie
