Captain America: Brave New World

Captain America: Brave New World | Disney Australia

Captain America: Brave New World, another action packed Marvel movie. I found the movie to be just fine, it wasn’t amazing and it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t bringing me back to the good old days. I do love to see Anthony Mackie finally get his time to shine in a leading role. The movie also puts an end to the infamous “I haven’t seen the Falcon movie… oh wait there isn’t one” joke from a comic con panel with Tom Holland and Anthony Mackie back in the good old days.

I loved the Bucky cameo but definitely wanted and expected more of the character. The two have always been kind of attached in my mind, and after sharing the screen for the Falcon and Winter Soldier series, I just wanted more of their dynamic. I did like Sam Wilson’s new sidekick, Joaquin Torres played by Danny Ramirez. His character added some much needed comedic relief. Throughout the film, some jokes were funny, and some just really didn’t land. I wanted a little more humour. My personal favourite was the on-going Antman jokes between Sam and Joaquin.

I wonder how much money they had to pay Harrison Ford to play President Ross, but I loved it. He’s a fantastic addition to this cast and makes the movie better. I also liked the return to some of the plot lines from the original Incredible Hulk movie from 2008, but I just wanted more from that too.

I liked that they brought up re-forming the Avengers team. I know that the new Avengers movies are coming in the next couple of years, so it will be interesting to see who makes up that core team. Otherwise I am not really interested in a multi-verse and celestial beings war on Earth like they are setting up.

Overall, the movie just felt bland and unoriginal. It met my expectations and didn’t blow me away. It doesn’t signal to me that Marvel is going back to the glory days anytime soon. But somehow I keep paying money to go see these movies so who knows.
