Regretting You

I'm backkk.

Every time I have tried to explain what Regretting You is about, the other person is always kinda like WTF is this movie. This movie is so cheesy but so cute. I think we needed a lil romance movie this time of year and this was it. I think I loved it less for the movie itself, and more for the film-going experience. Being in a room full of women and girls - screaming, crying, and laughing together was so fun. It was a real girl hood experience. It may not be your cup of tea, but to the girl who yelled “Girl what the hell” at the main character in the theatre, you made me laugh out loud.

Regretting You is centred around a mother-daughter relationship between 17-year-old Clara and her mother Morgan who go through a traumatic experience that brings them closer together, and brings them both into new relationships. Clara's dad and aunt die in a car crash, exposing their secret affair and turning their families' lives upside down. Through their new-found romances, friends, and the truth- Clara and her mother re-connect and develop a new and improved relationship with each other.

The family relationships - mother/daughter, daughter/aunt, grandpa/grandson, father/son (who might not really be his son) dynamics were all really well played on screen and I loved to root for them. I loved how complicated the different family dynamics are and how they grow throughout the film. This is actually a pretty big cast and they were able to fit so much screen time for each character in the film. You get to know them the same way I usually feel with characters after a whole season of a show. The character development arc in the film flows well for the main characters.

The pacing and structure of the film is well done. I don’t usually see book adaptations that move from page to screen as seamlessly as this one does. The story is different than any other romance movie I have seen recently. Get the tissues out for this one because it is a sad one.

The mother-daughter relationship is at the forefront of the film and the mother does so much for her that she doesn’t see, Clara doesn’t appreciate her as much. After the death of her father and her aunt and the big reveal that they were lying to her and her mother this whole time, she really looks at her mother's over-protectiveness differently. They both grow to understand each other better through this traumatic life event.

I loveeee Clara and Miller, they are so sweet. Kinda messy. But really sweet. I like that you get two POVs in this movie and get to see a teen romance and a more adult relationship in the same film. It's easy to feel connected to these characters.

This is the first movie in a while that I have seen Dave Franco in. You know what, maybe not his best performance but I liked him in this role. Some of the acting on the adult side could have been better. McKenna Grace and Mason Thames both did a great job in this film.

Overall, this movie is cheesy, cute, sad, and romantic and I do recommend watching in theatres for a fun girls day.
